jose1711 15:24 Location: Phone Model: | Hello Stephen, can you please tell when was the last update done in vector maps? I am not seeing edits I made more than a year ago (will specify location if required). Thank you, jose
Stephen 19:53 Location: Phone Model: | Hi Jose, Unfortunately the OSM dataset is far too large for my server hardware to handle now, so it is using a static data snapshot from quite a few years ago (possibly around 2012). Therefore I'm afraid any recent edits won't show up on the vector maps on the phone - sorry! Cheers, Stephen
jose1711 20:03 Location: Phone Model: | Uh oh. I thought data is from 2018-ish. Hm.. since TMJ does not show every POI out there would it help if it gets preprocessed via osmfilter (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osmfilter)? Or maybe that is not the real problem and it's more about things like mass imports such as buildings? Is there anything that can be done to improve the situation? What is the maximum size of OSM file your server can process?
Stephen 12:36 Location: Phone Model: | Hi Jose, To be honest I don't think there is anything I can do about this, I can't remember exact dates but I suspect the current snapshot is at least 10 years old, from when the OSM Planet file was around 20GB (compressed) - it is now 160GB! Another issue was when the OSM way ID's first exceeded 32-bit values this created a big jump in server resources which I never resolved. Since there is barely anyone using TMJ anymore it doesn't seem worth the effort to re-write everything :-( Sorry! Stephen
jose1711 13:25 Location: Phone Model: | Hi Stephen, hmm.. I understand - seems I was a bit too optimistic about the current state of TMJ :-) For the program to be useful in a long run it would be great if it could read data cached on the SD card (as possible with raster maps) and of course the format of vector data is published so that someone from community can write a OSM -> TMJ maps converter (32bit IDs could perhaps still be used if raw OSM data lookup is disabled). But with BB and/or dumb-phone-using community slowly disappearing it does sound more like never-gonna-happen. So to summarize (and please correct me if I am wrong) the status of TMJ in 2021 is as follows: - *vector maps - download works but data is from around 2010 which is also making things like lookup raw OSM data useless - raster maps - Mapnik works, did not test other sources, possibility to use locally cached tiles using TMJ-MapOrganiser - online search - broken (returns "MapQuest Geocoding Engine is currently unavailable"), the service is up though (maybe auth/key issue?) - online routing works - tested with MQ at least - *location sharing/livelinks - works - *bi-directional track/POI synchronisation - works - other things - did not test Items marked with asterisk (*) will get broken as soon as Stephen no longer sees the need to operate the server.
