I've just manage to valid the signal... and now it works well sorry for flooding...

But i've a second question : is there a version for touch screen mobile? By the way i can have fullscreen trackmyjourney without the fat ugly navigation cross that i have now... I'll use it while paragliding so i need the biggest resolution possible.

thx in advance and sorry for my bad english...

Hi,

Glad its working... (the Menu/Settings/Other Settings/Int GPS: Allow Costs option might speed up the initial time-to-fix of the GPS).

Currently I've not got plans for a full touchscreen version (perhaps in the future though). You should be able to use the touchscreen for *very* basic scrolling though (its split into 9 segments, mimicing the arrow keys, fire, star, hash and select1/2)

" By the way i can have fullscreen trackmyjourney without the fat ugly navigation cross that i have now "

Do you mean the crosshair on the plan/map views? The Plan/View/Show Crosshair context menu option can turn this on/off...

Does the 5800 only show TMJ in a small section of the screen? I think this is down to the phone, I don't think theres much I can do about it :-(

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi

I manage to remove the ugly navigation cross. in fact this is a default system for non touch app. So now i've a fullscreen TMJ! I remove it in app setting in the app menu of my 5800. It works really good on this touchphone , when i touch at the down left i open menus and i can navigate in it by touching over (moving Up in the menu ) or under (moving Down in the menu) . cancel is at the down right . i've tested it this weekend during a paragliding flight and no problem to use it even with gloves ! I have tested a lots of gps software for my gpsphone and even if i haven't tested all the possibility of TMJ i can say it's the best for what i've to do . So Thx for this great job !

Just a wish when we fly without engine, a very usefull info is the "ground glide ratio" and the " glide ratio to goal or next TP"

If you have other question on TMJ running on 5800xm, ask me.

Sorry for my bad english i hope i'm understandable.

bye

Great - glad its working better! I've just tried the fullscreen option in the 5800 emulator and yes it is a lot better - I overlooked the setting the first time round!

Just a thought...
It seems that quite often, people have specific readouts that they would like, that are quite specialised, and not of much use to the majority of users, but very useful to a relatively small sub-set (eg the Glide ratio mentioned above) I would guess that a lot of the time, these are reasonably straight forward calculations, the main problem is where to display the info.
What do you think about having a little 'library' of these specialist calculations, and having one or two sections of (say) the 'Track' or 'Navigation' screens where the user can select which (if any) they want TMJ to calculate and display...?

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

Yeah, I've not really yet decided on the best way to do this (perhaps read that as "the easiest way to do it from a coding point of view"!).

Thing is I'm trying to get all the parameters to display reasonably well on *so* many varieties of screens (eg portrait/landscape, high res/low res, large fonts/smaller fonts, etc), which is largely why I haven't yet included this customisability. Internally, for example, its very easy for me to change individual items on the Text or Gauge pages, but if I make this customisable then there has to be a whole new level of code to handle this (and to a large extent I suspect that *most* people would probably stick with the default, making the extra complexity unnecessary)...

I've got a bit of test code that makes the Text Screen customisable via a webpage (rather than fiddling with setting everything on the phone), and would theoretically update when doing a waypoint sync, for example. Its rather on the backburner at the moment though - will maybe get to it eventually!

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,
I was not thinking of that level of customisability!
Simply a couple of 'spare' boxes on one of the screens where you could select the info that was displayed in them from a list of 'special calculations'
I agree with you that giving more customisation than that would probably be a waste of your effort for 99% of users. I certainly doubt that I'd bother changing the layout of the screen from your defaults. However, depending on the activity I was involved in, I might want to change the meaning of the 'Custom1' box from (say) 'Glide Ratio' when I was in my hangglider(if I had one) to 'Rolling Average Ascent Rate' (whatever that means) when rock climbing...

Hi Stephen, Chris and the others

A full setting screen via PC will be perfect but i can imagine the work that means to run on a maximum devices so take your time and enjoy outside life :). For my wish of ground glide ratio you need to use vertical speed and speed but i've noticed that the info of vertical speed is not as precise as speed because of the unprecesily of gps altitude calculation ... so it's maybe very hard to code it well because of using filtter or other magic stuff... If you become limit nervous breakdown working on it , forget it no problem... To calculate it, "real" flying device use a barometrical sensor for alt and vario info. For the moment phone brand doesn't find it useful to integrate it their device...:(

Hi Nico,

The altitude accuracy is something I've been pondering over - I'm a little concerned about people using TMJ for these higher-risk activities, and as you say, the altitude readings from phone gps devices are not really accurate enough for reliable data. So for the moment I think I'll leave these specific gliding calculations to the dedicated barometric sensors that have been properly calibrated for the activity!

Stephen

Thank you nkovolov,
for your valuable hints on using TMJ in full screen mode.
Do you have found a possibility to zoom in plan or map view (sound volume like on SE phone does not work here) or hearing the sound when GPS looses coordinates?

Which of the two Nokia version do you install, I haven't seen a difference on the first sight:
S60+GPS (eg N82/N95): [JAD] [JAR]
S60+GPS+Keyboard (eg E61/E71): [JAD] [JAR]

Bytheway:
When using the navigation cross and the simulated keys A to D I can not customize A and B, they are fixed to gauges view and graph view, but C and D can be matched to * and # so zoom in the map views.

Thanks for your hints,
Meinalf

Hi again Meinalf,

I've actually now got a Nokia 5800 myself in order to improve touchscreen support in TMJ.

For the moment the S60+GPS is the best version to use (the only difference with the E61 version is the key mappings for its qwerty keyboard). I'll eventually add a 5800-specific version for the higher resolution screen.

The top left and top right corners of the touchscreen can be used for the */# keys. I noticed the same issues with the ABC and D keys, though haven't looked into this (I'm making it run fully fullscreen so these won't be needed anyway once I've finished the improvements).

Must say I'm very impressed with the speed of the Nokias graphics, the maps work very well, especially with the touchscreen 'map dragging' that I'm building into the next version...

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen

Just back from my sailing trip and i can say that Tmj works very good for that !! we used it as rescue gps during a "fun" smogy night navigation between rocks with succes...

"I've actually now got a Nokia 5800 myself in order to improve touchscreen support in TMJ." : good news !!

i'm sure you'll make THE software...

Thx again, bye

Hi Nico,

Glad to hear you had a good holiday and that TMJ was useful!

Yes, I'm using the 5800 myself now and am pretty pleased with my progress of adding touchscreen support (even if I do say so myself!). Will hopefully have a new version ready in a couple of weeks (don't hold me to that though!).

Have you had any luck with v0.6.9? I have to say that it installed completely fine for me and I haven't been able to recreate the problems that you were having.

I'd definitely recommend checking for firmware updates, as these can often fix a lot of weird issues. For reference, my phone is running:

Software version v21.0.025
Date: 02-04-2009
Custom version 21.0.025.428.01 (probably implies Vodafone UK)
Custom date 02-06-2009
Language 01
Type RM-356

Is yours a similar version? (Menu/Settings/Phone/Phone Management/Device Updates)

Cheers,
Stephen
